PROGRAMMERS
Programming is a demanding position for emotionally and spiritually mature individuals with servants’ hearts. These individuals are organized, motivated, and creators of fun yet challenging activities. Programmers have a desire to see children and staff grow in Christ through their camp experience. They enjoy making things happen and can organize a group of people. Reporting to the Summer Ministries Director, Programmers work together as a team, and are required to have a spring start date in order to be adequately prepared for the summer camp season. Programmers preferably have at least two years of experience in the WSC setting and are twenty-one years of age or older.
Other Programming Responsibilities:
* Planning and overseeing all activities from flag raising through to the end of campfire, including but not limited to flag raising, mealtimes, skills, free time, chapel, Hi-Lite, games, opening and closing ceremonies
* Stepping into the role of counselor in case of illness or in the event of any other absence
* Leadership role in staff devotions
* Mentoring counseling staff
* Constantly searching for ways to improve the program, while being careful to stay within budget
* Maintaining open communication between staff, campers, leadership, and occasionally with parents
* Other duties as required or as they arise.
COUNSELORS
Counselors are fun-loving individuals, positive role models, and live out their Christian lives in order to show the kind of love that only Christ can give. Their top priority is to be an example of balanced Christian living. They love being with and working with children. They are mature individuals, have a teachable spirit, and are able to work with a team of other like-minded people. Counselors should exhibit strong, compassionate leadership, always encouraging and guiding campers to enable them to become all that they are capable of becoming. A counselor is to seek to develop campers who will have the desire and ability to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ one day at a time during the coming year and throughout their lives. Senior Counselors are at least 18 years old. Counselors are at least 17 years of age.
All counselors’ responsibilities include the following:
* Ensuring campers are receiving appropriate levels of care and attention
* Assisting with the effective delivery of the program
* Developing and maintaining proficiency in instructional areas (skills, devotions)
* Leading campers by example in every activity and routine
* Preparing exciting and informative lesson plans
* Knowing what equipment and materials are needed for any activities and taking the steps to have them available
* Taking a leadership role in cabin devotions
* Make it a point daily to lift up and encourage campers and fellow staff members
* Maintaining open communication between staff, campers, and with parents
* Sitting with campers during meal times and interacting, supervising, and maintaining order
* Helping campers get ready in the morning for the day and in the evening for bed
* Ensuring cabin clean up takes place each day.
SECRET SERVICE TEAM
The Secret Service Team is an integral part of the Willow Springs Camp Team. The Secret Service work behind the scenes to ensure that camp runs smoothly, as well as assisting with skills and other activities, and learning leadership skills. The Secret Service Staff are divided into two groups, the Kitchen Staff and the Maintenance Staff. The Cook, trains, supervises, and mentors the Kitchen Staff, while the Maintenance Team Leader does the same for the Maintenance Staff.
COOK
The Cook is someone who enjoys preparing nourishing yet simple meals. The position includes meal planning, menu preparation, and food ordering. The Cook is ultimately responsible for maintaining health and safety standards and supervises the kitchen staff. The cook directly supervises the Kitchen Staff, ensuring a high standard of cleanliness and professionalism. They enjoy working with young people and leading them as a team. The Cook is responsible to the Summer Ministries Director.
Responsibilities:
* Plan all menus on a weekly basis following Canada’s Food Guide
* Help train and supervise kitchen staff in various duties
* Mentor and disciple kitchen staff
* Schedule appropriate shift rotation and ensure equal opportunity and sharing of responsibilities
* Conduct Sunday afternoon meetings with Maintenance Team Leader to prepare Secret Service Staff for the week
* Order all food and kitchen supplies
* Work within a budget as set by Camp Director
* Keep inventory of all food and supplies
* Put away all food from meals
Staying within the food service budget
* Prepare all meals and snacks
* Supervises food delivery and facilitates storage.
ASSISTANT COOK
The assistant Cook is a mature and responsible individual. This person is spiritually mature and has a desire to see young people grow in Christ through service in the Kitchen. The Assistant Cook’s focus is on food preparation, dining hall preparation and clean up. They work alongside Kitchen Staff, helping train them when needed and helping with the tasks they are assigned to do. The assistant cook is responsible and reports to the cook.
Responsibilities:
* Help train and supervise kitchen staff in various duties
* Maintain open and effective communication regarding food service expectations
* Assist with meal preparation as needed or directed by the Cook
* Assist with keeping careful inventory and communicate ordering needs to the Cook
* Ensure proper storage of all food and supplies
* Maintain a clean and sanitary working environment.
* Ensure proper cleaning and operation of major and minor appliances and fixtures.

KITCHEN STAFF
Kitchen Staff, who are part of the Secret Service Team, are important members of the Willow Springs Camp staff. Being Kitchen Staff is a vital position that includes preparing food, setting up the dining room, washing dishes, and general kitchen duties. There is an enjoyable balance between work and time off with many opportunities to get involved in the camp activities. Kitchen Staff are at least 15 years old and report to the cook.
Responsibilities:
* Setting tables before each meal
* Serve food for buffet meals
* Assist with unloading of delivery trucks
* Wash dishes, cutlery, pots, and pans; dry all cutlery
* Put all dishes and equipment away after each meal
* Follow all daily and weekly schedules (includes sweeping floors, mopping, and cleaning of sinks and other surfaces)
* Clean counters, floors, cupboards, walls, and kitchen bathroom daily
* Rinse recyclable items, crush, sort into bins
* Wipe down counters in dish room and keep tidy
MAINTENANCE TEAM LEADER
The Maintenance Team Leader is a mature and responsible individual, who enjoys leading a team of young people and doing general maintenance. He or she directly supervises the maintenance staff, ensuring a high standard of cleanliness and professionalism. This individual both works with and supervises those under them, training and helping with the tasks they are assigned to do. This person is spiritually and emotionally mature, at least 18 years old, has an attention to detail, and has a desire to see young people grow in Christ and develop good working habits. The Maintenance Team Leader oversees the cleanliness, upkeep, and repair of camp facilities. The Maintenance Team Leader reports to both the Summer Ministries Director and the Camp Director.
Responsibilities:
* Train and supervise maintenance staff in various duties.
* Conduct Sunday afternoon meetings with cook to prepare Secret Service Staff for the week
* Dining hall clean-up
* Bathroom cleaning
* Emptying of waste receptacles around camp property regularly, and the collection and placement of garbage each week on garbage day
* Ensuring that recyclables are kept in a tidy fashion and are placed at the roadside on collection day
* Tidying the chapel daily
* Trimming and lawn work
* Watering flowers daily
* Camp projects (nature trails, repairs)
* Keep careful inventory of maintenance tools and equipment
* Minor building repairs and upkeep
* Other maintenance duties as assigned by Director
MAINTENANCE STAFF
Maintenance is a vital position which includes keeping camp neat and clean, maintaining the grounds, cleaning the washrooms, chapel, and other camp areas. There is an enjoyable balance between work and time off with many opportunities to get involved in the camp activities. During part of the morning they may also assist with teaching camper skills and activities, and are encouraged to participate in games and activities with campers and other staff when they have completed their responsibilities. Maintenance Staff are at least 15 years old and report to the Maintenance Team Leader.
Responsibilities:
* Dining hall clean-up
* Bathroom cleaning
* Emptying waste receptacles around camp property regularly, and the collection and placement of garbage each week on garbage day
* Ensuring that recyclables are kept in a tidy fashion and are placed at the roadside on collection day
* Washing camp windows once per week
* Tidying the chapel daily
* Trimming and lawn work
* Watering flowers daily
* Camp projects (nature trails, repairs)
* Waterfront upkeep
* Equipment maintenance
* Minor building repairs and upkeep
* Other maintenance duties as assigned by Maintenance Team Leader.
ADDITIONAL STAFF ROLES
In addition to the primary roles listed above, some staff take on additional areas of leadership. These areas include, but are not limited to, the following roles:
VIDEOGRAPHER
The Videographer is responsible for the filming, editing, and production of the Weekly Camp DVDs, End-of-Summer Staff DVDs, as well as any promotional DVDs requested. The videographer works in conjunction with the Programmers, and reports to the Summer Ministries Director.
WATERFRONT STAFF
Our Head Lifeguard and Lifeguards work together to ensure the safety of our waterfront area.
HEAD LIFEGUARD
The Head lifeguard is responsible for the overall safety, operation and supervision of the waterfront and all of its activities. They are to run weekly emergency search drills and practice scenarios for guards to stay current with training. The Head Lifeguard will provide additional instruction in supervision, positioning, accident prevention and intervention, and emergency response to lifeguards who do not possess a current NLS certificate. The Head Lifeguard is to read and be aware of the standards outlined by the OCA (Ontario Camping Association) in the SWIMMING section. They are also responsible for maintaining a high standard of cleanliness at the waterfront. The Head Lifeguard is at least 18 years old, posses a NLS certificate and has a minimum of 250 hours of experience in aquatic supervision.
Responsibilities:
* Organize Waterfront Binder
* Read OCA Standards on Swimming
* Liaison between ministry of labor and camp
* Conduct daily team meetings with lifeguards
* Debrief after incidents/drills
* Ensure a consistent 15 minute rotation during guarding
* Organize and instruct missing swimmer/person procedure. “Airhorn Drill.”
* Attend all medical emergencies
* Ensure lifeguards are in proper dress for their shift and are properly equipped.
LIFEGUARDS
Lifeguards are at least sixteen years of age and possess a current Bronze Cross or equivalent. It is preferred that lifeguards possess a valid NLS Certificate. They are mature, safety-minded individuals. They enjoy young people and working outdoors. |
